I’m a writer. Plain and simple. Some days I actually enjoy it, some days I absolutely hate everything about it. Isn’t that how life goes with most things? Often times (at least with me) the things we’re best at are the things we can hardly stand. Anyways, I was having a fantastic writing day. All of you out there know what I’m talking about….the day you’re glued to the keyboard, your eyes are bloodshot from forgetting to blink, your fingers start cramping from typing like a mad person. One of those crazy, brilliant, awesome, succesful days. My finished piece was awesome, at least I thought so…Mind you this piece of writing was in journalistic style, it was covering a terribly tiring subject and I had very little information to work with. I was pretty proud when I turned out a complete, pretty bada** cover story.
Sadly, my happy, cloud-nine bubble burst. Someone edited my paper…not the good, helpful kind of editing either. The kind of editing where you want to pull your hair out from the back-and-forth stylistic struggle. Mind you this individual does not make a living as a writer, nor is he/she educated in AP Style. OH, and for all you journalists out there, he/she was also my main source for the article! NEVER should a journalist EVER have to let the source preview his/her article. It creates problems – people realize their quotes sound terrible, they change their words, it becomes, quite simply, a hot mess. I guess that’s why this is happening to me. The whole hot mess world follows me around – are you all detecting a theme here?
As many days as I love my job, I realize there will be a few with a couple bumps in the road. I know this day was just one of those “terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad days.” {Alexander books, anybody?} I need to get used to a corporate setting where those above me feel they have the qualifications to run every aspect of the business. It’s a learning curve that is proving to be quite difficult for me. I like being right….all the time. No really, all the time. Until I’m Queen of the World, I guess I’ll have to take the backseat in a corporate setting….I’ll have to take whatever these SMT members throw my way – all the while grinning, acting as if I love every single minute.
